London…a city for the upper class unmarried…not for the poor.

One cannot really love London. It is unsatisfactory in every way, a foggy, dead alive city, like a dying empty antheap. London was created for rich young men to shop in, dine in, ride in, get married in, go to theatres in, and die in as respectable householders. It is a city for the upper class unmarried and the middle class family – not for the poor.

Cyril Connolly, 1928.

  1. You know, I can’t help myself: I just love London! On the good side there are world class museums and art galleries with free (!) admission, and (also free): beautiful parks, the long pedestrian walkway along the South Bank of the river, ditto along the Canal past Little Venice, historic squares, churches and palaces, new architecture โ€” plus all the tourists and the cosmopolitan & multi-cultural population. Housing of course is very expensive but it’s a fabulous place to be a visitor. ๐Ÿ™‚

  2. John, Yes, it does have a lot to recommend it. I think Connolly was venting his general spleen at life when he wrote that in his diary. Still, I enjoy the occasional visit to the Big Smoke but wouldn’t dream of living there again.
